Chan Ka Yuet & He Man Ching Semester-end Project

Pigeons in Hong Kong

In this project, we want to record the environment of the pigeons that live in Hong Kong. We chose a place, which is a sitting-out area near the Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is one of the liveliest places in Hong Kong.
We find it interesting that Tsim Sha Tsui is a place that gathers a lot of people but also a lot of pigeons. Most of the animals tend to live in their territory, but pigeons live in the human region. This phenomenon shows us that the domains of humans and pigeons have overlapped. People in developed places, especially Hong Kong, can balance the relationship between human and animal coexistence. In the sitting-out area, we could find many pigeons gathering. We wanted to explore how pigeons live in human environments, so we recorded them with a 360 camera and ZoomH3VR.

In this recording, we can hear the sound of pigeons’ wings and cooing. Also, the sounds of human activities, such as sweeping the floor, footsteps, and the sound of the cart being pushed. In the video, we can drag the angle of view to observe the pigeons’ movements, such as a flock of pigeons flying to another place and walking around the camera. Meanwhile, we can see sanitation worker’s actions. Using 360-degree video, we can drag the angle of view to control the sound’s position. The pigeons flew over the top of the camera, and the audience could drag the angle of view as if they were watching them in reality. It helps the audience to experience the environment and the atmosphere more effectively.

In this project, we find that pigeons are not scared of people. When the sanitation worker was close to them, some of them did not fly away. Instead, they walked around near the sanitation worker. This shows that the relationship between humans and pigeons could be harmonious, that both did not disturb one another. At the same time, we observed pigeons’ behaviors; they liked to flock together, and other pigeons would follow one or few of them that flew away first. Pigeons seem very comfortable living in Hong Kong.

We chose pigeons as our topic because we often see pigeons around us. Some people might think that pigeons are pests, that they might cause hygiene problems for society, while others might agree that they help to erase other pests. Furthermore, there are some regulations for protecting the pigeons in Hong Kong. For example, feeding them is forbidden, since humans could not interrupt and affect their natural instinct, which is important for their survival.

In our opinion, pigeons could live in harmony with people, which is perfect for today’s society. We would like to express that pigeons could be beautiful creatures. Not only humans are part of nature, but also the pigeons. Humans could have a harmonious relationship with animals, especially pigeons. We wish that the record could arouse the audience’s attention by reflecting on the coexistence of pigeons and humans.
