CHAN Ka Yuet and HE Man Ching Mid Semester

Busy MK/ TST

This project is about showing different sides of a place. We recorded with Zoom H3VR at a building called Lui Seng Chun. It is located in Mong Kok. It was originally a hospital and pharmacy. It is currently a Chinese Medicine Health Centre for HKBU.

At the beginning, we were looking for strange place that has ghost stories or urban tales which we were interested in. Therefore, we chose Lui Seng Chun since it had many strange stories. For example, some people saw a kid kicking a human head inside the building.

We think this place is interesting because it was built in the middle of a noisy environment which is rare for places with urban legends. There are two pavements next to Lui Seng Chun, it seems like it’s clamping Lui Seng Chun. Standing in the doorway of Lui Seng Chun, we could feel the stressful environment of Hong Kong. In the recording, there were noises of many cars passing through. The sound of the traffic lights kept ringing and people walked across the road fast. This made us anxious, but it reflects the real environment of Hong Kong. When we listened to the recording again, the scene reappeared in our mind. It is a noisy environment, but people are all following the rules orderly.

Inside Lui Seng Chun, it was less noisy. There was a strong smell of Chinese medicine in Lui Seng Chun because there was an herbal tea shop setting inside of the ground floor. The environment of Lui Seng Chun was leisurely and relaxed, which had strong contrast with outside. Besides, we found out that it was difficult to recreate the creepy atmosphere we originally thought. Not able to find any element of terror, we changed the idea of the topic. However, we thought that discovering the feature of contemporary Hong Kong society, like the stressful environment and busy city would be better.

We recorded in several standing points and combined the recordings in one. In the recording, we were playing the displayed abacus. Compared to the atmosphere outside, it felt more comfortable inside. This building was built with some special building materials to reduce the noise from outside, looking like a deliberate struggle against the outside’s busy world. There was a short dialog in the audio. A woman came to buy herbal tea and had a leisurely conversation with the boss. Furthermore, the boss had introduced some herbal tea.
Although the noise of traffic had never stopped in the recording, it showed the differences between inside and outside. The car sped by very quickly and people walk very fast, but we could feel the life pace is slow inside Lui Seng Chun, feeling like living in the last century. However, we were just resting here for a while because we still live in a high-pressure environment. Like the sound of the traffic lights through the recording, it’ll never stop.
