Playgrounds

Our project is an audio that shows various sounds from different places children love. The recording includes a series of places with varying atmospheres at different times. It can be separated into three parts, which start with a Jumping Gym, a noisy playground in the middle, and ends with a silent playground. Our focus point is the differences in surroundings from comparing the diverse atmospheres of the two playgrounds. We tried to compare the sound between the playground after school and at night. Other than that, we also wanted to compare the traditional and new types of playgrounds.

We agree that the two places have unique features despite being in a similar category. Firstly, Jumping Gym, as a popular indoor playground attracts lots of people, including various age groups other than small kids like teenagers, adults and even older people. People can play little games such as coin pushers to get tickets and exchange presents. With cheering music, they enjoy the relaxing atmosphere in the Jumping Gym and hence it is always crowded and noisy.

Secondly, we chose a traditional outdoor playground. People can always find a playground around their home because it is always the best place for children. It is full of children’s screams and laughter especially after school. Hence, the playground is considered a symbol of children. We believe that most people have their memories of playing in the playground with classmates or friends when they were kids. However, we no longer go there anymore when growing up and there will be a new generation that continues to play there. The playground will become empty and silent again when the children return home.

We hope this audio can denote the uniqueness and contradiction in playgrounds. Finding out different sounds in these places was interesting and made us recall our kids’ memories during the recording. As we grow up, it seems harder to be happy as we become more stressed, but kids can still feel simple happiness from daily life. Therefore, we think it is meaningful to regain and immerse ourselves in childhood and try to feel simple joy again.
