Dinosaurs
Once Upon A Liminal-Saurus
We are often curious and wonder what happened in the past, especially in
certain places we consider special to our hearts. In our group’s case, nature. There’s
always something with nature; and I know we would always wonder, like for example,
would there be a chance of the waters of the river being the very same river that a
dinosaur drank from millions of years ago? But with the boundaries of time and space,
certainly we can’t truly experience and see what happened in the past. Only with
imagination does it allow us to escape the boundaries of time and space. Inspired by
this curiosity and many scary pictures of dinosaurs on pinterest, we created an audio
ambience journey, which we can say seems like a liminal audio space where the
echoes of the past intertwine with the present. To be able to imagine being in the jungle,
surrounded by both prehistoric and present creatures, would definitely be an amazing
experience, experiment, and fulfillment of a childhood dream; and with this soundscape,
we can help that imagination and curiosity come true.
To get the recording materials, we hiked on quite a long hiking trail in Kam Shan
Country Park, where we found enjoyment and peace. We recorded everywhere, heard
many different kinds of birds, and even met many monkeys along the way. They
sounded like they were having a lot of fun, and the monkeys were also playing and
jumping onto the rivers from the trees. We also recorded some additional effects in the
SKM park.
To get some prehistoric vibes and sounds, we tried our best in recreating the
voices, but it was very hard. For the huge dinosaur (T-Rex) roar, we used our own
attempt at roaring, mixed with a downloaded goose sound from online. We wanted to
still use a common and available record animal to replicate the famous roar. We didn’t
find a goose, but we did find Scott Hessel’s Memorial Birdsongs’ website. Through the
websites, we found a few other bird noises that we believe can be edited and
interpreted as a prehistoric creature or bird noises if edited right. We also had to use the
SCM media sound library for clearer or greater effect noises, and a youtube video of
dinosaur steps to get a good sound for heavy steps. The following are the used online

that could help our curious minds to imagine being in a prehistoric era, using present’s
audio. This project dives into our fascination with history, imagination, and storytelling.
This project offers a unique and immersive experience that invites listeners through the
soundscape of a jungle inhabited by many creatures from past and present, all mixed
together in this one jungle soundscape.
