Wet Market

The theme of our mid semester project is Hong Kong Wet market. We went to North Point wet market and recorded different sounds by using a Zoom H4N Handy recorder. As we think that wet markets have a lot of interesting and unique sounds like the vendors calling out prices, the meat chopping sound, the haggling sound and laughter between vendors and customers, and the tram passing sound. Wet markets are our childhood memories. Visiting the wet market as a child brings back happy memories of being with family. We want the audiences to return to the feeling of childhood and be immersed in the sounds of the wet market. Also, the wet market represents the Hong Kong local culture. These noises can reflect the traditions of the community. The conversations between enthusiastic vendors and customers also creates a lively atmosphere that shows how the community connects.

We have recorded around twenty soundtracks from the wet market and filtered some special sounds. We used Reaper to encode our stereo recordings into a 4-channel ambisonic sound field. With multiple sound sources, we employed the MultiEncoder feature, placing all sources under the MultiEncoder Bus track and routing them to the Ambisonic Bus. In order to stimulate where we were recording at that time, we separate different sound sources into different channels. Channels 1 and 4 represent the ambient environment, including the talking sound of housewives and they are the sounds from the back. Channel 2, located in the front left, features vendors calling out while Channel 3 captures the sounds of customers buying food in front of us. This setup allows the audience to experience sounds from various directions, creating an immersive auditory experience that reflects the recording environment.
