Introduction & Aims
Based on the themes and audio skills that have been covered in this course, I have decided to recording a set of field recordings to create an art piece for this assignment. By using an ambisonics mic I have record different kinds of abimains noise around Hong Kong, my main goal is to let the audience to pay more attention on the unique sound on the streets of Hong Kong, as us locals never have the time to slow down our pace to link with out environment, I wish by this work I could use the ambiences of Hong Kong to let the audience to enjoy a sound experience of roam around the city, feel and listen to things that they do not pay attention on normally .
Location – Central
As for the location, I have chosen Central because it is the heart of Hong Kong. It is iconic for both local and foreigner, with diverse culture and a variety of transportation perfect for collection different kinds of noise for the audience to feel and understand more of Hong Kong. On the other hand, Central is a place that have a combine both nature(Hong Kong Part) and modern city. With both different parts of the district, I believe I could get a wider range of ambience for this project.
Recording Equipment : Ambisonics Mic The ZOOM H3-VR
The reason I would choose to use ZOOM H3 is because it can capture sounds from different directions and angles at the same time (H3-VR 360o Audio Recorder | Buy Now, n.d. ). Also, it is easy to use since it is an ambisonics mic with 360 audios (H3-VR 360o Audio Recorder | Buy Now, n.d.) . Besides, I got a good result for my last mid sem project because of using it, so I think it is worth to use in the final too.
Part I – Recording
A – MTR
I recorded the MTR sound to bring out the lively scene and situation of people coming and going. Also, I think the MTR broadcasting system and the sound of opening and closing gate is obvious and iconic. Therefore, I made a long sound recording for this.
B – Road & Street
I recorded the road and street sound and capture a lot of sound of public transport. I discovered that the sounds produced by various vehicles were all unique, but when they were combined, there was an inexplicable harmony.
C – Park / Location Sound
I walked onto the trail and felt the wildness sound surrounding me. It made me feel so refreshed and relax.
D – Cable Car
I recorded the sound of cable car passing by in the hill, hoping the surround sound would create an immersive feel to the audience.
E – Exhibition & Bar Sound
I visited an exhibition on the Peak Galleria, is about “Music Revolution” (an immersive music-themed check-in hall), also i went to a bar and recorded some amazing sound.
Part II – Sound Processing
I choose the suitable Plug-in according to the different sound characteristics, environment and atmosphere in the recording.
1. I picked out all the appropriate tracks.
2. I prune and restoration all the recording.
3. I group it together and start adding plugin.
Plug in :1. MultiEQ
I add it in the MTR recording to balance all the sound.
2. MultiEncoder
I add it in the Road recording to create the surrounding feel.
3. EnergyVisually
I add it in the Cable Car recording to create the surrounding feel.
4. RoomEncoder
I add it in the Exhibition & Bar recording to increase the reverd and try to feel the sound in different directions.
