Plover Cove Country Park

BACKGROUND

Our theme is “The Different Sounds of the Hiking Trail to the Plover Cove Country Park”. This work is inspired by the work “Kiatsu: The Sound of The Sky Being Torn” by Angus Carlyle and Rupert Cox. We used the Zoom H3 recorder to record various locations on the hiking trail for the audio recordings. As for the footage used in the finished work, we used our phones to record it. All of our audio are natural sounds, all of the sounds recorded are not in our control.

Originally, we wanted to record various locations within the Plover Cove Country Park because it is one of the bigger country parks in Hong Kong with the addition of beautiful sceneries and a variety of different locations, unfortunately, we were stopped by a sign where to continue, we would have to be experienced and well-equipped hikers. As there were only two of us and we weren’t experienced hikers, for safety reasons, we recorded the soundscapes of the hiking trail instead.

Within the recordings, we mainly recorded the sounds of lakes, rivers, and sounds that surround grassy areas. While it would be ideal if there were more interesting sounds, as our focus is on natural sounds, we cannot interfere.

In all our recordings, we place our phone next to the H3 recorder making it like a POV standpoint of the audio recorder. It is done so it gives the most accuracy of the “sight” of the audio recorder possible to make the experience both visually and audibly enjoyable. This is an exception, however, for the recording where the audience can hear water flowing below the bridge, as that angle is the most optimal for the viewer to know where they are, so the camera is not as refined and is shaky. It is also the riskiest as the way the camera was held was done with the risk of falling into the water.

EDITING

This work is edited in a video editing software first before any audio editing. This is done so it is easier to keep track as we may do trims on the video. When the footage is done, the video will be imported into Reaper along with the raw audio tracks done from the H3 Zoom recorder.

Via Zoom’s official software as well as Reaper, the audio is edited and trimmed so the footage that is imported syncs with the ambisonics audio. The finished video then is exported via Reaper.
