In this project, we aim to create an ambisonic environment of experiencing the life journey of a potato, using its perspective to narrate the experiences that a potato undergoes from the moment that it is purchased at the market to washing, slicing, frying, and being eaten. By utilizing Ambisonic audio recording techniques, specifically the H3-VR microphone, we will capture the vivid surrounding environment in the community and the specific sound of potato at each stage of its life. The post-production work will be done on Reaper and Logic Pro to enhance the audio to stimulate various sound sources in various directions and distances.

Concept Development

To narrate the life of a potato, we try to create different sound sources to stimulate the listener’s experience. On the stage at the street market, when the girl was buying the potato, we mixed the sounds of haggling, the crashing sound of potatoes, and the vibrant atmosphere which set the scene and immersed the listener in the environment.

Once taken home, the potato experiences the stage of cleaning, slicing, and frying. Before cleaning the potato, we created a crack noise by tearing tissue and sharpening the knives in different positions and directions. For another example, we place the H3-VR next to the potato and follow the direction of the potato to stimulate the sound source of water splashing on the potato while washing, chopping the potato at different directions (top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right) on the cutting board and the sizzling of oil in a pan will all contribute to the narrative.

Technical Approach

To achieve an immersive audio experience, we will utilize the Ambisonic recording technique. The H3-VR microphone’s capability to capture 360-degree sound will allow us to create a spatial audio experience that reflects the potato’s surroundings accurately. During the recording sessions, we will pay careful attention to the positioning of the microphone to ensure that the sounds are captured from the appropriate angles, enhancing the listener’s sense of presence.

To achieve an immersive audio experience, we utilize the H3-VR microphone to capture the 360-degree sound and create the spatial environment with Reaper accurately. During the recording sessions, we paid careful attention to positioning the position of microphone at various angles and distances to imitate the sound noise that what potato would potentially encounter.

In the post-production stage, we use Reaper and Logic Pro to edit and enhance the recording including crossfades, batch fades, edit transients, and adjusting the spatial placement of the sound source to richer the soundscape and create an immersive journey of the life of the potato.
