Abstract:

In recent years, more and more wet markets have been acquired by companies, such as LINK. Although the decoration and sanitary conditions were improved after the acquisition, the nostalgic human touch gradually disappeared. We heard the beep beep sound from the teller machines rather than the shopkeepers’ hawking.
We created this recording to represent the phenomena mentioned above interestingly. The listener will feel like undergoing a nightmare, traveling through wet markets and supermarkets dizzily, eventually awakening in a wet market.

The recording was made in the afternoon at North Point’s Chun Yeung Street wet market and several supermarkets, thus the recording also carries the sound of the tram.

Technical details:

  • Devices:

We used the Zoom H3 recorder to make recordings.

Before going out to record, we considered recording with Rode NTSF-1 and Zoom F8n Pro because they perform better in sound quality than the Zoom H3 recorder. However, they are bulkier to set up in the supermarket and wet market.

Therefore, we decided to use the Zoom H3 recorder which has a smaller size with the consideration of site area.

  • Software:

Reaper is used for audio editing, such as adding FX and format decoding.
